字形左右完全对称、中间留一条缝，这一点没有疑问；它画的是什么，则争议很大。白川静认为是把牲体对半割开，两边各连着骨肉；吴其昌认为是两把刀；王国维认为“卯”是“刘”的假借字，“刘”是宰杀；加藤常贤读作马嘴里的衔环，林义光读作头盔“鍪”的本字，严一萍读作“窌”，即掘地埋藏。工具书至今说“未有满意说法”，所以这里标为学界有争议。《说文》据小篆说它“象开门之形”，讲的不是甲骨的形体。卜辞里“卯”后面接的总是牛羊。

That the graph is perfectly symmetrical with a gap down the middle is not in question; what it pictures is heavily argued. 白川靜 reads an animal cut in two, each half still carrying bone and flesh; 吳其昌 reads a pair of knives; 王國維 takes 卯 as a loan for 劉, “to slay”; 加藤常賢 reads a horse's bit, 林義光 the original graph of 鍪 “helmet”, 嚴一萍 the original graph of 窌, a storage pit. Reference works still say no satisfactory account has been reached, so the badge says disputed. 說文's “the shape of a door opening” describes the seal form, not the oracle one. On the bones 卯 is always followed by cattle or sheep.
