Oracle-bone 牛 draws only the head, never the body: two horns sweeping up, a vertical line down the middle, and two short ear strokes branching from it. The upward horns are what counts: the same frontal animal head reads as 牛 when the horns sweep up all the way, and as 羊 (sheep) when they rise to a peak and then droop at the tips.
