甲骨文“家”外面是屋顶加两侧的墙（后来写作“宀”），里面是一头猪（“豕”）：猪头朝上，腿向一旁伸出。字形本身没有争议，但“屋子里为什么是猪”说法不一：有人认为商代人在屋下养猪，有猪才算一户人家；也有人认为这头猪与祭祀有关，屋子指的是宗庙。形认得清，用意还在讨论。

Oracle-bone 家 is a roof with walls down both sides (later written 宀) enclosing a pig (豕), drawn head up with its legs jutting out to one side. What the two parts are is not in doubt; why a pig is indoors is. One reading is domestic — Shang families kept pigs under the house, and a pig is what made a household; another ties the pig to sacrifice and takes the building to be an ancestral temple. The picture is clear, its point still discussed.
