甲骨文“星”多作两颗小方块或小圆圈，分在一株“生”（刚长出的草）的两旁：一般认为方块画的是夜空里的星点，“生”是给这个字注音的声符；也有只画三颗、五颗星点而不加“生”的写法。有学者指出，只画星点的形体和“晶”分不开，哪些辞例读“星”要靠上下文判断，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 星 usually sets two small blocks or circles on either side of 生, a sprouting shoot: the blocks are generally taken to be points of light in the night sky and 生 to be a phonetic; some forms give three or five star-points and no 生 at all. Scholars also note that the dot-only form cannot be separated from 晶, and which inscriptions read 星 has to be decided from context — hence the probable label on the picture given here.
