甲骨文“井”是两横两竖交叉搭成的井栏，也就是井口上防止人跌下去的木架。甲骨文的写法里没有中间那一点：小篆才在井栏当中多出一点，《说文》说那一点是汲水的瓦罐。

Oracle-bone 井 is the well-curb: two timbers one way and two the other, crossed over the well mouth so that nobody falls in. The oracle forms carry no dot in the middle; the dot turns up in the small-seal form, which the Shuowen explains as the earthenware jar used to draw water.
