甲骨文“鼎”画的是商代最重要的青铜器：上面是口沿和两只向外斜出的提耳，中间是盛东西的腹，下面是把它架在火上的足——从侧面看，通常只刻两只。和“皿”比一比：“皿”没有耳也没有足，只是一只放在底座上的浅盆。

Oracle-bone 鼎 draws the most important bronze vessel of the Shang: the rim with two ears slanting outward, the belly beneath, and the legs that hold it over the fire — seen from the side, usually only two are cut. Compare 皿, which has neither ears nor legs — only a shallow basin on a foot.
