卜辞里的“贞”写作“鼎”——画的是一只青铜鼎，从侧面看，所以通常只刻出两条腿。多数学者认为这是同音假借：商代“鼎”“贞”读音相近，就借鼎的字形来记“贞问”这个词；也有学者主张鼎本身是占卜仪式上的器具，字形与字义直接相关。借音说较占上风，所以这里标为“较可能”。卜辞里“贞”几乎总跟在“卜”后面。

In the divination records 貞 is written as 鼎 — a bronze cauldron, drawn from the side, so usually only two legs are cut. Most scholars read this as a loan for sound: 鼎 and 貞 were close in Shang pronunciation, so the cauldron was borrowed to write the word 'to inquire'. Others argue the cauldron belonged to the rite itself. The loan reading is the stronger one, so this is marked probable. On the bones 貞 nearly always follows 卜.
