“卜”画的不是一件东西，而是一件事留下的痕迹：占卜时在龟甲或兽骨背面钻凿再烧灼，正面就裂出这样的兆纹，商人照兆纹判断吉凶。“卜”的读音，有一种流传很广的说法认为就来自裂开时的那一声脆响。小枝在左在右都可以。它和“十”只差那一小枝，要留意。

卜 draws not a thing but the trace of an event: hollows were bored in the back of a turtle plastron or an ox bone and touched with heat, and a crack like this opened on the front for the diviner to read. The word itself, by a long-standing suggestion, echoes the sharp sound of the crack. The branch may point left or right. Only that branch separates 卜 from 十.
