这是甲骨文里最让人意外的一个字：商代的“七”写成十字形，正是今天“十”的样子。多数学者认为它画的是“切”——在一根东西上横切一刀，“七”是“切”的本字，后来被借去记数字。为了不和“十”相混，后来“七”的竖笔下端弯了起来，成了今天的写法。借“切”为数的说法虽占主流，仍非定论，所以标为“较可能”。

This is the biggest surprise in oracle-bone script: the Shang wrote seven as a cross — exactly the shape we now read as 十, ten. Most scholars take the picture to be a cut, one stroke across something, making 七 the original graph for 切 'to cut', later borrowed for the number. To keep it apart from 十, the upright of 七 later bent at the foot into the shape we write today. The 切 reading leads but has not settled the question, so this is marked probable.
