“八”是两笔相背分开的形状。通行的解释是它画的就是“分开”本身，“八”是“分”的本字，后来被借来记数字八；这一说虽通行，仍有学者存疑，所以标为“较可能”。它和“六”很像，区别在顶端接不接；和“人”也像，“人”的两笔上端相连，而且一长一短。

八 is two strokes turning away from each other. The usual reading is that it pictures separation itself — 八 as the original graph for 分 'to divide' — later borrowed for the number eight; common as that reading is, some scholars still doubt it, so this is marked probable. It is close to 六, which joins at the top, and to 人, whose strokes join and differ in length.
