“九”由一撇和一道横折带钩的笔画组成，究竟画的是什么，学界分歧很大：一说是手臂在肘部弯曲的样子，“九”即“肘”的本字；一说是伸手去探取的动作；也有人认为它只是一个抽象的数字记号。分歧至今未解，所以标为“学界有争议”。它和“弓”都有弯钩，“弓”有明显的双弯，还常带一条直的弓弦。
「九」由一撇和一道橫折帶鉤的筆畫組成，究竟畫的是什麼，學界分歧很大：一說是手臂在肘部彎曲的樣子，「九」即「肘」的本字；一說是伸手去探取的動作；也有人認為它只是一個抽象的數字記號。分歧至今未解，所以標為「學界有爭議」。它和「弓」都有彎鉤，「弓」有明顯的雙彎，還常帶一條直的弓弦。
九 is a falling stroke beside a stroke that runs across, turns down and hooks, and what it draws is much disputed: an arm bent at the elbow, making 九 the original graph for 肘; a hand reaching out to feel for something; or simply an abstract numeral. The disagreement is unresolved, so this is marked as scholarly debate. 九 and 弓 both end in a hook — but 弓 has a clear double curve and usually a straight string beside it.
