“示”的字形是一竖加一横，像一块竖立的板子；《甲骨文编》所收的十四种写法里，最多的一种在长横上面再压一道短横，四种只刻一横一竖，三种在柱两旁各加一小点，两种在柱底加一道底座。学界多把它读作祖先的神主（灵位），也有人认为画的是立起来的木表或石柱，还有人把柱旁的两点看作祭祀时浇下的酒。神主一说领先，但这块板子究竟是什么、两点又指什么，至今仍有讨论，所以这里标为“较可能”。它和“干”形状相近，“干”的顶端分成两杈，“示”的顶端是平平的横笔。

示 is a vertical with a crossbar, like an upright slab; of the fourteen forms in the catalogue the commonest adds a second, shorter bar above the first, four cut only the bar and the upright, three add a small dot at each side of the pillar, and two add a base at the foot. Scholars mostly read it as an ancestral spirit tablet; some take the picture to be an upright wooden marker or a stone pillar, and some read the two side dots as wine poured out in the rite. The tablet reading leads, but what the slab is and what the dots stand for are still argued, so this is marked probable. 示 looks much like 干 — but 干 forks into two prongs at the top and 示 is closed off by a flat bar.
