“祭”最早只有两部分：手（又）和肉，旁边常带几点血滴；后来才添上“示”，把祭桌也画进字里，就是今天的“祭”。看到手、肉、神主三样凑在一起，基本可以断定是这个字。和“祝”相比，“祭”里举着东西的是手，不是跪着的人。

The earliest 祭 has only two parts, a hand (又) and a piece of meat, often with drops beside it; 示 was added later, bringing the altar into the sign. Hand, meat and tablet together identify it reliably. Against 祝, what holds something up in 祭 is a hand, not a kneeling person.
