甲骨文“马”是竖着写的侧视马形，最醒目的是头上那只大眼睛和颈背上竖起的鬃毛——刻手正是靠这两处，把马和别的四足动物区分开。写法有繁有简，鬃毛可以多到一排，也可以省到一笔。

Oracle-bone 馬 is a horse in profile, written down the column. The big eye on the head and the mane bristling along the neck are the two features scribes used to tell a horse from the other four-legged animals; the mane can run to a whole row of strokes or shrink to a single one.
