甲骨文“目”多作横置的眼形，眼眶中间有瞳仁，有的把瞳仁刻成一个方框。晚期已经有竖着写的例子，后来为了适应竖行的行款，整个字形立了起来，才变成今天上下长的“目”。

Oracle-bone 目 is usually a horizontal eye with a pupil inside the lids, sometimes cut as a small box. Upright examples already appear in later inscriptions, and standing the eye on end to fit the vertical writing column is why modern 目 is tall rather than wide.
