甲骨文“自”是正面的鼻形：上面一个尖顶是鼻梁，两旁各一笔直落下来，收尾时向里一钩，那是鼻翼；中间再加一两道横。它和“目”都是轮廓加横画，区别在外形：“目”是横着的长方形，“自”上面有尖顶、下面开口。“自”后来被借去表示“自己”；有一种流传很广的说法是，人说到自己时会指着鼻子。

Oracle-bone 自 is a nose seen from the front: a peak at the top for the bridge, one stroke falling down each side and hooking inward at the foot for the wings of the nose, and one or two bars across the middle. Like 目 it is an outline with bars inside; the shape is what separates them — 目 is a rectangle lying on its side, while 自 has a peak on top and stays open at the bottom. 自 was later borrowed to write "oneself"; a widely repeated explanation is that people point at their own nose when they say "me".
