甲骨文“齿”画的是张开的口和口里的牙：外面一圈方框是嘴，里面一颗一颗的小方块或尖角是牙，上下两排、只画上排的写法都有。后来上面加了声符“止”，才成为“齒”。和“口”比一比：“口”里面是空的。

Oracle-bone 齿 draws an open mouth with the teeth in it: the frame outside is the mouth, and the small blocks or points inside are the teeth — some forms show two rows, others only the upper row. The phonetic 止 was added on top later to give 齒. Compare 口, which is empty inside.
