甲骨文“首”是一个侧看的头形：外面一圈头的轮廓，里面嵌着一只小小的眼睛，头顶常竖着三四绺头发，也有省去头发的写法。只画一只大眼睛、不画轮廓的是“目”；有了轮廓，才是“首”。《说文》说小篆上面的“巛”就是头发。
甲骨文「首」是一個側看的頭形：外面一圈頭的輪廓，裡面嵌著一隻小小的眼睛，頭頂常豎著三四綹頭髮，也有省去頭髮的寫法。只畫一隻大眼睛、不畫輪廓的是「目」；有了輪廓，才是「首」。《說文》說小篆上面的「巛」就是頭髮。
Oracle-bone 首 is a head seen from the side: an outline of the head with a small eye set inside it, and often three or four locks of hair standing on top, though forms without the hair are common too. A large eye on its own, with no outline, is 目; the outline is what makes it 首. 《說文》 reads the 巛 on top of the seal form as the hair.
