甲骨文“刀”是从侧面看的一把刀：主笔从上弯到下，末端收成尖；中间向左下斜出的一短笔，一般认为是刀柄那一端。和“斤”比一比：“斤”的斧刃横着装在柄上，“刀”只有顺下来的一条刀身。
甲骨文「刀」是從側面看的一把刀：主筆從上彎到下，末端收成尖；中間向左下斜出的一短筆，一般認為是刀柄那一端。和「斤」比一比：「斤」的斧刃橫著裝在柄上，「刀」只有順下來的一條刀身。
Oracle-bone 刀 shows a knife from the side: the main stroke curves from top to bottom and finishes in a point, and the short stroke branching down to the left is generally taken to be the handle end. Compare 斤 (axe), whose blade is set crosswise on the handle; 刀 is a single blade running down.
