甲骨文“斤”是一把带柄的斧：上面张开的一块是斧刃，从它旁边斜伸下来的长笔是柄。它和“刀”都是刃器，区别在装法——“斤”的刃横过来装在柄上，“刀”的刃顺着柄。后来“斤”被借去当重量单位。

Oracle-bone 斤 is an axe on its handle: the piece opening out at the top is the blade, and the long stroke running down beside it is the haft. 斤 and 刀 are both edged tools; the difference is how they are set — the blade of 斤 crosses the handle, the edge of 刀 runs along it. 斤 was later borrowed for the unit of weight.
