Oracle-bone 戈 breaks a real weapon into a few strokes: the upright shaft, the crosswise blade, and a bar at the foot. Whether the blade points left or right is not fixed — Shang carvers mirrored signs freely. A blade reaching sideways off a long shaft is enough to identify it.
