甲骨文“兵”上面是斧头（斤），刻成一个折角的钩形，下面是左右两只手，画的正是“手持兵器”。它的本义是兵器，后来才引申指拿兵器的人——士兵。和单写的“戈”相比，“兵”下面一定有两只手。

Oracle-bone 兵 puts an axe (斤) on top, cut as an angled hook, and two hands below: a weapon being held. Its first meaning is 'weapon'; only later did it come to mean the person holding one — a soldier. Next to a plain 戈, 兵 always has two hands underneath.
