这个形体上端分杈、中间加横。学界对它究竟是什么有两种主要说法：多数学者（郭沫若、李孝定等）认为它是挡在身前的盾牌，顶上两杈是盾面上的羽饰，后世“干戈”连用指兵器即取此义；徐中舒等则认为它是打猎、格斗时用来叉击的杈形长杆，和“单”同类，“干犯”的意思由此而来。盾牌一说较占上风，但并未定论，所以这里标为“较可能”。

The shape forks at the top and carries a crossbar through the middle. Two readings compete. Most scholars (郭沫若, 李孝定 and others) take it for a shield held in front of the body, the two prongs being feather ornaments along its top — the sense behind the later pairing 干戈 'weapons'; 徐中舒 and others take it for a forked pole used to jab in hunting and fighting, of the same family as 單, which is where the sense 'to offend' comes from. The shield reading leads but has not settled the matter, so this is marked probable.
