甲骨文“射”把“弓”和“矢”合在一起：弓竖着，箭横搭在弦上，箭头伸到弓的外面。有的写法把弓弦省去，只留弓背。到小篆，字形改成从“身”从“寸”，《说文》说“寸”也就是手，弓和箭就看不出来了。

Oracle-bone 射 joins 弓 and 矢: the bow stands upright, the arrow lies across the string and its head reaches out past the bow. Some forms leave the string out and keep only the stave. In small-seal script the sign was rebuilt from 身 and 寸 — 說文 remarks that 寸 is also a hand — and the bow and arrow dropped out of sight.
