中间是交叉架起的柴堆，旁边的短点一般认为是飞出来的火星。燎祭是把整堆柴烧给天神和山川，卜辞里常见“燎于河”“燎三牛”这样的句子。晚期有的写法在柴堆下面再加一个“火”，把意思说得更明白，后来就成了带火旁的“燎”。

The middle is a stack of crossed firewood; the short marks beside it are generally taken for flying sparks. The 燎 rite burned a whole pile of wood for the sky powers and the rivers and mountains — “burn to the River”, “burn three cattle” are common phrasings on the bones. Later forms add 火 under the stack to make the sense plain, and that is the 燎 we write today.
