甲骨文“焚”就是“林”加“火”：上面两棵树，下面一团尖尖的火苗。商王田猎常用这个办法——放火烧掉林子和草丛，把野兽赶到一处再围捕，卜辞里的“焚”多半记的正是这种打猎。有的写法把树和火都缩小，下面另添一只手，画的是人拿着火去点。小篆写作“燓”，《说文》说“烧田也”，讲的还是烧林烧田这件事。

Oracle-bone 焚 is 林 (a wood) over 火 (fire): two trees above, a pointed flame below. Shang hunts often worked this way — the woods and scrub were fired to drive the game together before it was ringed and taken, and 焚 in the divination records usually reports exactly such a hunt. Some forms shrink the trees and the flame and add a hand below, showing the person who sets the fire. The small-seal form is 燓, which 說文 glosses “to burn off the fields” — still the same practice.
