甲骨文“虹”是一道拱形，两端各有一个张口的头。商人把彩虹想成一条两头的龙蛇，弯下身子到河里喝水，卜辞里就有虹从北边出来、到河里饮水的记载。写法上拱顶有的浑圆，有的折成平顶；拱线有单也有双。《说文》说“虹，螮蝀也，状似虫，从虫、工声”，到那时已经把它当成一种虫来写了。
甲骨文「虹」是一道拱形，兩端各有一個張口的頭。商人把彩虹想成一條兩頭的龍蛇，彎下身子到河裡喝水，卜辭裡就有虹從北邊出來、到河裡飲水的記載。寫法上拱頂有的渾圓，有的折成平頂；拱線有單也有雙。《說文》說「虹，螮蝀也，狀似蟲，从虫、工聲」，到那時已經把它當成一種蟲來寫了。
Oracle-bone 虹 is an arch with a gaping head at each end. The Shang pictured the rainbow as a two-headed dragon-serpent bending down to drink, and the records do speak of a rainbow coming out of the north and drinking at the river. The top of the arch is round in some forms and flattened in others, and the arch itself may be one line or two. 說文 says “虹 is the 螮蝀; it looks like a creature; from 虫 with 工 as the phonetic” — by then it was written as a kind of insect.
