In oracle-bone 雨 the line on top is the sky and the short uprights under it are falling rain; the commonest form turns the line down at both ends, adds a third stroke in the middle, and sets three drops below. The number of drops is not fixed — anything from two to six — and some forms drop the sky line altogether, leaving two rows of drops. Compare 云 (cloud): what hangs below there is curling vapour, not marks falling one by one.
