甲骨文“云”上面多作两道横画，代表天；下面是一段卷曲的线条，画的是升腾的云气，卷尾常常绕成一个圈。这个字后来加“雨”头写成“雲”，《说文》以“雲”为正篆、“云”为古文，简化字又用回“云”。和“雨”相比，“云”的下部是卷曲的线条，没有下落的雨点。

Oracle-bone 云 usually sets two horizontal lines on top for the sky and, beneath them, a curling line for vapour rising and rolling over, its tail often closing into a loop. The character later took a 雨 top and was written 雲; 《说文》 treats 雲 as the standard seal form and 云 as the older one, and the simplified script returns to 云. Against 雨, the mark below here is a curl, not a row of falling drops.
