甲骨文“川”是三条并行的长线，画的是两岸之间流动的河水；不少写法把中间一条断成几点，或者在水道之间再点上水花。和“水”比一比：“水”只有中间一条弯曲的水道，两旁散着水点；“川”是三条一样长的线一起往下流。

Oracle-bone 川 is three long parallel lines: water running between its banks. Many forms break the middle line into short dashes, or flick extra droplets into the gaps. Compare 水 (water), which keeps one winding channel down the middle with droplets to either side; 川 sets three lines of the same length running down together.
