甲骨文“泉”外面是一圈方方的轮廓，画的是出水的山石；轮廓里上端一横带一竖，就是水涌出来的泉眼，再往下便是流走的水，有的写成一道长流，有的断成几点。和“川”比一比：“川”只有三条并行的水线，外面没有这一圈石头。
甲骨文「泉」外面是一圈方方的輪廓，畫的是出水的山石；輪廓裡上端一橫帶一豎，就是水湧出來的泉眼，再往下便是流走的水，有的寫成一道長流，有的斷成幾點。和「川」比一比：「川」只有三條並行的水線，外面沒有這一圈石頭。
Oracle-bone 泉 sets a squared outline around everything: that is the rock the water comes out of. Inside it, near the top, a bar with an upright below it marks the spring's mouth, and under that runs the water — sometimes one long stream, sometimes broken into drops. Compare 川 (river): three parallel lines of water with no rock around them.
