甲骨文“禾”像一棵成熟的谷子：直立的秆，下面是根，秆的中段有一两笔斜穿而过的叶子，最要紧的是顶上那个垂下来的穗。和“木”比一比：“木”的顶端是向上张开的枝，“禾”的顶端弯过来垂向一边。

Oracle-bone 禾 is a ripe grain plant: an upright stalk with roots below, one or two leaf strokes cutting slantwise across it, and — the deciding detail — an ear bending over and drooping at the top. Compare 木 (tree), whose branches spread upward; the top of 禾 curves over to one side.
