这个字形是在“木”的顶上加果子：有的写三个小圆，有的只写一个大圆；后来圆被写成方框、里面加上格子，就成了今天“果”字上面的“田”。不过甲骨文里有没有独立的“果”字，学界看法并不一致：《甲骨文编》正编没有收“果”，把这种写法释作“果”，依据的是西周金文的字形和后来的研究，而不是这部字编；现在的字书多采用这个读法，所以这里标为“较可能”。

The graph sets fruit on top of a 木: sometimes three small circles, sometimes a single large one; the circle was later squared off and given internal divisions, which is why today's 果 carries 田 on top. Whether the oracle bones already have a separate character 果 is not settled, though: 《甲骨文編》 does not list it among its main entries, and reading this shape as 果 rests on the Western Zhou bronze forms and on later scholarship rather than on that catalogue. Most dictionaries now accept the reading, which is why the badge here is "probable" rather than "widely accepted".
