甲骨文“旦”上面是“日”，下面另有一块封闭的方形或圆形，两部分并不相连。《说文》认为下面那一笔是地，太阳从地上升起；也有学者认为那一块画的是太阳在水面上的倒影。到金文、小篆，下面那一块才收缩成一条横线。

Oracle-bone 旦 puts 日 on top and a second closed block, square or round, below it; the two never touch. 《说文》 takes the lower mark to be the ground, with the sun rising from it, while others read the block as the sun's reflection on water. Only in bronze and seal script does that block shrink to a single line.
