甲骨文“石”由两部分组成：上面刻成一个窄窄的三角形，那是探出来的山崖（后来写作“厂”），崖角下面拖着一道长笔；下面的方框或圆块是从崖上落下来的石头。山崖朝左朝右都有，甲骨文里反而以崖在右、石块在左的写法更多。

Oracle-bone 石 has two parts: a narrow triangle on top for the overhanging cliff (later written 厂), with one long stroke trailing down from its corner, and a square or rounded block beneath it for the stone that has come off. The cliff may face either way — in the oracle bones it more often stands on the right with the stone on the left.
