甲骨文“土”下面一横是地面，上面是一团隆起的土堆；土堆多作上尖下圆的枣核形，也有刻成三角形的。到商代晚期的黄组刻辞里，土堆已经简化成一竖；金文、小篆又在竖上加一横，就成了今天的“土”。商代卜辞里，这个字也用来写土地神的“社”。

Oracle-bone 土 draws a ground line with a mound of earth heaped on it; the mound is usually a closed almond shape, pointed at the top, though some scribes cut it as a triangle. By the late Huang-group inscriptions the mound has shrunk to a single upright; bronze and seal script add a bar across that upright, giving today's 土. In Shang inscriptions the same sign also writes 社, the altar of the earth god.
