甲骨文“面”就是“目”的外面加上一圈脸廓，所以关键不在眼睛，而在眼睛外面那道封闭的边线。花园庄东地的几片甲骨把脸廓刻成方的，殷墟王卜辞里多刻成菱形。《说文》说“面”是“象人面形”，讲的也是这道外廓。

Oracle-bone 面 is 目 (an eye) with a closed line drawn round it, so what decides it is not the eye but the rim outside it. The pieces from Huayuanzhuang East cut that rim square; the royal divination records at Yinxu usually cut it as a lozenge. 說文 explains the character as “a picture of a person's face”, which is that same outer rim.
