Oracle-bone 臣 is the same eye as 目, turned through ninety degrees so that it stands upright. There are two accounts of the upright eye: one has the eye turning upright as a person lowers the head, which is why the graph writes the servants and officers who worked for the king — 說文's gloss, “a picture of submission”, reads exactly that posture; the other takes it for an eye opened wide, originally the character 瞋 “to glare”, with the sense “servitor” borrowed later. 小臣, “lesser servitor”, is a title that turns up often in the divination records.
