Oracle-bone 舌 has a 凵-shaped mouth below and something forked rising out of it, often with one or two dots beside it. Most scholars read that as a tongue — the fork is its tip, the dots are spittle — and this reading leads today; the tip forks because the scribes drew the tongue everyone could recognise, a snake's. A second account holds that the thing rising from the mouth is not a tongue but an object held in it, the same element that underlies 言 and 音; because of that the picture is graded probable. 說文, reading the seal shape, explains it as 干 placed over 口, which is a Han-dynasty account.
