这个字左右完全对称，中间一条缝，这一点没有分歧；分歧在于它画的是什么。古文字学者多数认为是对半剖开的祭牲，因为卜辞里“卯”后面跟的总是牛、羊一类；《说文》则说它“象开门之形”，是照小篆讲的。前一种说法在甲骨学里更通行，所以这里标为“较可能”。

That the graph is perfectly symmetrical with a gap down the middle is not in question; what it pictures is. Most palaeographers read two halves of a divided offering, because on the bones 卯 is always followed by cattle or sheep. The Shuowen instead calls it “the shape of a door opening”, reading the seal form. The first account leads in oracle-bone studies, so the picture is graded probable.
