“执”画的是抓获俘虏：右上角那件上有方框、下带尖角的东西是“幸”，也就是木枷（手铐）；旁边跪着的人把两手伸进枷里。卜辞里“执”常常说抓到了羌人或逃亡的人。把“执”关进一个方框，就成了“圉”——牢狱。《说文》说“执，捕罪人也”，和甲骨文的画面一致。

執 shows a prisoner being taken: the object with a box on top and a point below is 幸, a wooden manacle, and the kneeling figure beside it has both hands inside. Divination records use 執 for capturing Qiang people or runaways. Shut that same picture inside a square and you get 圉, a gaol. 說文's gloss, “執 is to arrest a criminal”, matches the oracle-bone picture.
