甲骨文“印”是一只手（爪）加一个跪着的人（卩）：手从上面按下去，本义就是“按”。后来这个“按”的意思改写成“抑”，“印”被留给按在泥上留下痕迹的印章。手有时斜斜地从旁边伸过来，有时正压在人的头顶上，两种写法都常见。《说文》说“印，執政所持信也”，说的已经是印章。

Oracle-bone 印 is a hand (爪) above a kneeling person (卩): the hand bears down, and the original sense is “to press”. That sense was later written 抑, while 印 was kept for the seal pressed into clay to leave a mark. In some hands the hand comes in at an angle from the side, in others it sits straight on the crown of the head; both are common. 說文 already describes the seal: “印 is the token of authority held by those who govern.”
