甲骨文“及”是“人”加“又”：前面是一个侧面的人形，后下方是一只手，手指正好搭上那个人——追上了。这个字的意思一直没变，“来得及”“及格”的“及”都是从“追上、够到”来的。它和“取”不同：“取”抓的是一只耳朵，“及”抓的是一个整个的人。《说文》说“及，逮也”，和甲骨文一致。

Oracle-bone 及 is 人 with 又: a person in profile ahead, a hand below and behind, its fingers just reaching the figure — caught up with. The meaning has never moved; 来得及 and 及格 both go back to “to overtake, to reach”. It differs from 取, where the hand grips an ear: here it takes hold of a whole person. 說文 says “及 is to overtake”, which agrees with the oracle graph.
