“受”是两只手加一件东西:上下各一只“又”,中间那个带横格的长形一般认为是“舟”——盘子或小船。给和接本来用同一个字,后来才加了提手旁分出“授”。要和“争”分开就看中间:“受”的两手之间托着一件有轮廓的器物,“争”的两手扯的是一条细长的东西,而且两手是对着拉的。《说文》说“受,相付也”,正是交接的意思。

受 is two hands and one object: a 又 above and a 又 below, with the long ruled shape between them generally taken to be 舟, a tray or small boat. Giving and receiving were written with the same graph; only later was a hand radical added to split off 授 (to hand over). To tell it from 爭, look at the middle: 受 holds an object with an outline between the hands, while 爭 has the two hands hauling on one thin thing in opposite directions. 說文's gloss, “受 is to hand over to one another”, is exactly the act of passing something.
