“争”是两只手拉同一件东西：上面一只“又”，下面一只“又”，中间那条长划就是被争的物件。两只手的方向相反，一个往上、一个往下——这正是它和“受”的分别：“受”是顺着往下交，两手之间托的是有轮廓的器物。《说文》说“争，引也”，“引”就是往两头拉。中间那条长划究竟是什么，也有学者认为是一具犁，画的本是两人合力拉犁耕地，“争夺”是借来的用法；不论哪一说，两手相反用力这一点是一样的。

爭 is two hands hauling on one thing: a 又 above, a 又 below, and the long stroke between them is what is being fought over. The two hands pull in opposite directions, which is exactly what separates it from 受, where the hands pass an outlined object down from one to the other. 說文's gloss is “爭 means to pull”, and pulling is what the two hands are doing. What the long stroke itself is has a second account: some scholars read it as a plough and the picture as two people hauling one through a field, with “to contend” borrowed later. Either way, the two hands straining against each other is the same.
