甲骨文“舟”是从上往下看的一条船：两边两道长笔是船舷，中间的横画是横在舱里的舱板，一般刻两道；船的两头不封口，船舷一直伸出去。商代卜辞常问渡河的事，“舟”就是当时过河用的船。

Oracle-bone 舟 is a boat seen from above: the two long strokes are the gunwales and the bars between them are the planks laid across the hull, usually two of them. The ends are never closed — the gunwales run straight out past them. Shang divinations often ask about river crossings, and 舟 is the craft they crossed in.
