“其”画的是簸箕，里面的斜线或横线是竹篾编出来的纹路。后来这个字被借去当语气词，人们才在下面加一个“丌”（架子），另造出“箕”来写筐子。卜辞里“其”表示“将要、大概”，常常和“勿”“不”一起出现。认字抓两点：筐口两角上翘，筐里有编纹。

The graph draws a winnowing basket; the crossing or level lines inside are its plaited weave. When the character was borrowed as a particle, a stand 丌 was added underneath to make 箕 for the basket itself. In divination records 其 means "will" or "probably" and often stands next to 勿 or 不. Two features identify it: the corners flaring up, and the weave inside.
