多数学者认为“于”画的是一种吹奏的管乐器，也就是后来“竽”的本字，弯出去的那一笔是管子的下端；也有人认为画的是一件盛东西的器物。《说文》说它“象气之舒”，那是汉代人从小篆推出来的解释。管乐器一说占优，所以标为较可能。要和“干”“千”分开，看竖的下端是不是向左弯出去。
多數學者認為「于」畫的是一種吹奏的管樂器，也就是後來「竽」的本字，彎出去的那一筆是管子的下端；也有人認為畫的是一件盛東西的器物。《說文》說它「象气之舒」，那是漢代人從小篆推出來的解釋。管樂器一說佔優，所以標為較可能。要和「干」「千」分開，看豎的下端是不是向左彎出去。
Most scholars read 于 as a blown pipe — the original graph of 竽 — with the curving foot standing for the lower end of the tube; a minority take it for a container. 說文 explains it as "breath spreading out", derived from the seal shape by Han-dynasty readers. The pipe reading leads, hence "probable". To tell 于 from 干 and 千, check whether the upright bends away to the left at its foot.
