“之”是“止”（脚）加一条横线：横线代表出发的地方，合起来就是从这里动身前往。《说文》按小篆说它像草木长出地面，那是汉代人的分析；甲骨文的上半明明是一只脚的形状。要和“止”分开，只看脚底下有没有托着的那一横。

The graph is 止, a foot, set on a single bar: the bar is the place one starts from, so the whole says "to set out from here". 說文, reading the seal form, explains it as a plant pushing up through the ground; in the oracle bone script the upper part is plainly a foot. To tell it from 止, look for the bar underneath.
