甲骨文“今”是一个尖顶的倒 V 形，当中一横，下面常另加一短横。这个图形画的到底是什么，学界至今没有定论：一说是把“口”倒过来写，本是“含”的初文；一说是倒扣的盖子或器皿，也就是后来写作“亼”的那个部件；一说是悬着的铃舌。三说各有支持者，谁也没有压倒别人，所以这里标为“学界有争议”。字的用法倒很清楚：卜辞里“今日”“今夕”“今春”到处可见，就是“现在这一个”。《说文》说“今，是时也，从亼从乁”，那是汉代人对小篆字形的分析。

Oracle-bone 今 is a pointed inverted V with one bar across the inside and often a second short bar below. What the picture shows has never been settled: some read it as 口 (mouth) turned upside down, the original of 含 “to hold in the mouth”; some as an upturned lid or vessel, the component later written 亼; some as the clapper hanging in a bell. Each has its supporters and none has won, so the picture is graded disputed. How the character was used is not in doubt: 今日, 今夕 and 今春 run all through the divination records and mean “this present one”. 說文 says “今 is the present time; from 亼 and 乁”, which is a Han-dynasty analysis of the seal form.
